Film marketing for independent features

A buyer who already wants your film pays more for it.

Dawson's builds demand for independent films — positioning, sales materials, festival and market strategy, and the campaign that surrounds a release. We do it as part of selling the film rather than as a separate service, because marketing that isn't built around a sales plan is just expensive noise.

Why a sales agent should do your marketing

Distributors are no different from any other buyer: they want what other people already want. Not because they lack taste, but because their business is capitalising on demand that already exists. A film no one has heard of is a risk they price accordingly. A film with momentum — a name already moving through the market — is a different negotiation entirely.

That momentum doesn't arrive by accident. It requires the right positioning, the right materials, and deliberate noise in the right places before a market opens. Dawson's builds it on purpose — not as a service separate from the sale, but as the thing that makes the sale possible.

Marketing done before the sale isn't presentation. It's price.

What we do

Positioning. What the film is, who it's for, and which recent titles a buyer will measure it against. Decided with you, early, and then applied consistently to everything.

Title and artwork. We test creative — title, key art, trailer cuts — with real audiences and iterate on what the data shows. The goal is materials that convert: a title that travels, artwork that works at thumbnail size, a trailer that creates desire rather than explaining plot.

Sales materials. We work with you to produce the trailer, sizzle, key art, one-sheet and EPK — materials designed to make buyers want the film before they watch a frame. Buyers in each territory will often adapt or replace materials for their market; what we give them is a strong foundation to work from.

Festival and market strategy. Which festivals, in what order, and what each one is for. A premiere is a marketing decision as much as a prestige one, and the wrong slot can cost you a territory.

Buzz, deliberately. Trade coverage, talent-led press, screening strategy, social, influencer and community outreach, clipping — the full scope of what it takes to put a film in conversation before it reaches the market. Curiosity ahead of a market is worth real money and it doesn't happen by accident.

Audience-facing campaign support. Where a distributor wants it, we hand over everything we learned rather than letting it evaporate at the point of sale.

How this connects to the rest

The three services are one sequence.

Testing tells us what the film actually is — who responds to it and how strongly. Marketing takes that and builds desire in the people who'll pay for it. Sales converts that desire into deals, at a price the evidence supports.

Run separately, each is weaker. A campaign built on a guess about the audience is a guess. A sale made without any demand behind it is a discount.

Questions

Isn't marketing the distributor's job?

In their territory, after they've bought it, yes. But the version of your film that buyers see is built long before that, and it's the one that sets your price. That part is ours.

Do you do publicity?

We co-ordinate rather than execute. We work with publicists rather than running press in-house — what we do is ensure the publicity strategy is built around the sales plan, the timing is right, and the story being told to press is the same one being told to buyers.

Can you market a film you don't represent?

Yes, we can.
